Is there an echo in here?

The Recording Arts students have been hands-on with sound in ways you may not expect.  As part of the current segment of the course titled "The fundamentals of sound," students have been learning about frequency range and response, overtones and harmonics, parametric and graphic equalization, and the behavior of sound.

In a class exercise, each student recorded an echo outside the school, and measured it's delay time using computer software.  The instructors measured actual distance from the building, and kept that a secret.  The students then analyzed the recorded echo accurate to the thousandth of a second, and calculated the distance based solely on sound.  Sounds complicated, right?  Well, just ask any student in the Recording Arts program and they'll tell you it's a piece of cake :)

We'd like to congratulate Janel Lange for winning the contest for closest measurement.  Guess how far she was off from the actual distance - one inch!

In addition to sound fundamentals, students also learn about how we as humans observe the audible world around us.  Check out this fantastic video illustrating the amazing evolutionary tool we all enjoy every day - our ears!
